MudPenny started as a coffee cart in downtown Grand Rapids and now occupies the south end of Hotel Rose's ground floor, its fourth location. The day runs from 7 a.m. coffee and brunch, with protein pancakes on one side of the menu and funfetti pancakes and cherry pie French toast on the other, through a seasonal dinner list of short rib, halibut, and gnocchi, and cocktails after. It's the rare downtown room that works for a laptop at eight in the morning and a date at eight at night.
